Distance Learning

5th-grade 2020-2021

Overview

5th-grade students will follow a 4-day synchronous/1-day asynchronous schedule throughout Distance Learning.  More specifically, students will receive “live” instruction via zoom on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, for the following courses: Math, Science, Language Arts, Literature, Social Studies, Religion, Spanish, Music, and Socio-emotional Learning (SEL). Fridays will be dedicated for limited-screen asynchronous independent work for those previously mentioned courses, as well as “live” specialist Zoom classes for PE/Health.

Technology

It is recommended that each5th-grade student have their own computer during Distance Learning.  OLG has student chromebooks available for checkout.  Please contact the school office ASAP if you need assistance.

Need tech support? If you are experiencing technology issues (Zoom, Google Classroom, school devices, etc) please don’t hesitate to contact Beth Sommerville, OLG technology support specialist.

Learning Management System

I will be using Google Classroom extensively throughout Distance Learning. Here, students will be able to find their digital assignments, supplemental activities, handouts, and class resources. Emails and Google Classroom will be used for teacher communication and homeroom announcements.

Classroom Rules and Etiquette while using Zoom

  • This is our virtual classroom. Appropriate classroom behavior & attire is expected.
  • Use headphones or earbuds.
  • Log into your meeting from a distraction-free, quiet environment.
  • Please keep your audio on mute until you want to speak. This will help to limit background noise.
  • If you would like to speak or answer a question, use the “Raise Hand” feature. Then unmute yourself after you are called on.
  • If you would like to use the chat box, remember that it is public and a record of the chat is kept and archived.
  • Have class supplies and materials ready before class begins.
  • Make sure your video is on so we can see your happy face.

In the boxes, create a step-by-step progression that shows the possible order that each theory took place. Could one theory happen that led to another theory and so on? What is the order of the Mayan downfall? Include a description of each picture you draw. Be sure to follow the arrows on the organizer! The first scenario that you think took place goes in the upper left hand box.  (due today by 3pm)-

History/ Social Studies: EXPLORATION AND COLONIZATION!

In history we are exploring the impacts of the ancient cultures in South and Central America and their colonization. We are moving North, focusing on the colonization done by Spain and explorers from various countries, and will be looking at the Triangle Trade Routes, the impact of slave trade and slavery, and the eventual colonization of the east coast, of what is now the US/ Canada– forming the “13 Original Colonies” and beyond. We have explored the impact of Spain on the formation of the Americas, and will be making connections between Colonial Research Projects and the New England Colonies. We will be focusing on the impact of slavery and will be leading us back to our StoryPath unit from September and October on the Revolutionary War.

Science: Earth and Sun!

Math: Area! and Decimals (Ch. 6 and 8)

We are concluding our focus on Area with rectangles and triangles and have spent the past few days making our triangles and rectangles come to life, making real-time models in the classroom and outside on the playground. Students have been able to apply their knowledge and have a deeper understanding of area, triangles, and rectangles.

Next up, we are entering Book B and will be focusing on Decimals!

Religion: Faith in Action

We are the hands and feet of Christ. Students will be focusing on the Catholic Social Teaching (CST), in depth, for the month of May. Each week we will be focusing on a different area, and will be applying the CST to real-world, relatable situations.

Band: Band is on Wednesday and Friday. Miss McKamey said the kids sound awesome! Keep up the practicing and hard work! Please be aware of changing dates and other dates in which students will need their instruments, as some upcoming practices are also combined band days with the School Band (6th-8th grade).

Spanish: Students typically are assigned homework on Mondays. It is due (usually) on Friday. Students are encouraged to visit Rockalingua and login using the login information that they should have written in their notebooks.
