March 18th Newsletter
March 18, 2016
Dear OLG Families,
It was great to see so many of you at our State of the School Meeting! We had updates about curriculum, progress on our goals for our next accreditation cycle, and special events, as well as highlights from Parent Org fun- and fundraisers including the Auction, and a financial report. Thank you, everyone – and especially the 8th grade families who provided childcare! It’s hard to re-cap an evening like this, capturing the energy and passion of the many presenters, as well as audience participation, but we’ll get a brief summary sent out shortly. Meanwhile, please submit your family’s 2016-17 registration to assist us in preparing for next year! The 2016-17 school calendar will be sent home in our FCEs next week!
This past week, we enjoyed the performance of “The Big Broadcast” by Sing Out Seattle and our after-school drama camp students. It is a joy to see our students’ confidence and many talents on stage!
Holy Week
On Monday morning, we will continue our Lenten tradition of gathering in the hallways for prayer. Tuesday through Friday, we’ll begin the day with five minutes of silent prayer. All are welcome to join us in the church on Tuesday, March 22nd, from 2:00 – 2:30 pm, for the Year of Mercy Stations of the Cross led by 7th grade.
Holy Thursday Soup Supper
They can teach! They can cook! Come join our teachers and staff for the traditional OLG Parish Holy Thursday Soup Supper. This week, we’ll be chopping vegetables and stirring the soup pot, so that we can all gather in the School Hall for a simple supper before our Holy Thursday Mass of the Lord’s Supper at 7:00 pm. Bring a bowl and spoon; soup will be served starting at 5:30 pm.
Lenten Drive Continues through Good Friday
The Student Council has extended its Lenten Care Kit Drive through Holy Week. Help OLG meet its goal of 300 care kits. See the updated flyer for specific needs. Thank you for your generosity in support of our neighbors in need.
OLG Champions in Knights of Columbus Free Throw Competition
OLG students Mary C. (7th) and Marc Christianson (5th) competed at the annual Knights of Columbus State Basketball Free Throw Championships on Saturday March 12th in Yakima, WA. Marc took 3rd place overall in the 10 year old boys division. Marc won the local council competition and then moved onto the districts where he made 24/25 foul shots! He qualified for the state championships by winning the regional competition held at St. Anthony’s on March 5th.
Mary C. made 20/25 free throws twin the 13 year old girls division at the state championship. This is Mary’s 2nd straight championship win in 2 years. Mary made 22/25 as a 12 year old to win the championship in 2015.
Congratulations to both Mary and Marc for their hard work and representing OLG!
Death is one of the hardest subjects to discuss with children. But it is of course part of life…In order to help, we must let children know it’s okay to talk about it.
By talking with them, we may discover what they know and don’t know, and if they have fears or misconceptions. We can help them by listening to their questions, by providing information, comfort and understanding. Often easier said then done. Read more…
In class, the Kindergarteners have listened to the new commandment: Love one another as I have loved you. They heard examples of how Jesus showed God’s love to others by telling them about His Father, blessing the little children, healing the sick, sharing meals with His friends, and forgiving. The students also gave examples of how they show love. Here are a couple of their thoughts:
hugging is a good way to show love
respecting everyone
listening when someone is talking
making a paper heart for someone who is sad
holding hands while waiting in line and don’t forget to hold the door for others
sharing my toys and sometimes my dessert
Jesus says, “As I have loved you, so you also should love one another. This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” John 13:34, 35

We follow Jesus this week on our Lenten journey as he enters Jerusalem, a community he knew well. Catholic Relief Services Rice Bowl asks us to prayerfully enter into our own communities, to find those who are hungry and thirsty, those who need our help. How does our Lenten journey motivate us to serve those we encounter in our daily lives? Visit the CRS Rice Bowl website for more. Did you know that 25% of your Rice Bowl donations stay local to help alleviate hunger in our community? OLG has received grants to help with our Community Meal and Peace Garden.
