Parent Org Family Math Night
What a wonderful evening we had on Tuesday, enjoying OLG friends and math challenges. We’re so grateful to Math Night Chair, Lisa Booth, and the Parent Org for planning and hosting this evening. The School Hall was full of families, pre-k through 5th grade, rotating between math games, and each station was run by one or two middle school students. Thanks to all of the parents who dove in to help, especially Gene Page on the popcorn machine, and Yvette and Mike Messina, coordinating the middle school volunteers. I was so impressed with our student helpers; it’s always awesome to see them interact with and teach our pre-k and elementary students.

Another Successful 5th grade-sponsored “Over 65 Dinner”
We’re so grateful to this year’s 5th grade class for carrying on the wonderful tradition of the Over 65 Dinner. This event is always well attended and lively. The food is great, and music by the Starry Crowns tops it off! Special thanks to 5th grade teacher, Lauren Hobbs, parent coordinator, Alison Christianson, David Lindholm for donating the hams and glaze, and all of the students and family members who helped with the event.
Our “Light Up the Night” celebration is just around the corner! See the Parent Org section for details about how you can get involved!
Yesterday, I attended the funeral of Mike Baciagalupi, principal at Holy Family School. What a wonderful tribute it was to his life and work, and the impact he made on the students and families at Holy Family. Students from O’Dea High School were on hand to help, and Holy Family students, staff, and community members had prepared a program with reflections and tributes afterwards. It was a touching program and a reminder of the power of being in a faith-centered community during hard times. While I was there, I spoke briefly with the administrative assistant who expressed her extreme gratitude for the members of our OLG community who have been going down to help in their office. Thank you!
In honor of All Saints Day, each third grader chose one saint toresearch and study throughout the month of November. This project culminated in a class presentation where students dressed as their
saint. The saint presentations were wonderful. We will keep the posters on display for a few weeks in the school hallway, so please feel free to come on in!
Science
WE ROCK IN 3RD GRADE! Third graders are studying about rocks and minerals. Throughout the unit, students have had the opportunity to investigate a selection of the most common rocks and minerals that make up Earth’s crust and learn some techniques used by geologists to identify them. Our science journals contain loads of observations, measurements, and data. It’s always hands-on and tons of fun in science class!
Social Studies
As part of our social studies unit on Seattle, the third grade class took a field trip to Pike Place Market to experience and explore one of the longest-running farmer’s markets in the United States. Students were excited to talk to fishmongers and listen to buskers. We also had the chance to see the dirtiest place in Seattle…the GUM WALL! While third graders were bummed to hear the gum wall would soon get cleaned, they are eager to go back to the market to get started on Gum Wall 2.0.
November 30th 6:30 PM in the School Hall
Join us for an eye-opening presentation from Stefanie Thomas with the Seattle Police Department about how to be aware and alert to the dangers and vulnerabilities the internet, social media, online gaming and smart/cell phones can pose for our children. Learn how to protect your children, and even yourself, when taking advantage of the many opportunities and tools the internet and cell phones provide.

The students at OLG have been making great progress on their artwork. We have been doing a lot of drawing and are working on many different projects, some of which are currently displayed in the hallways.
The pre-k, kindergarten and 1st grades have
completed pumpkin drawings using chalk pastels on brown paper. They learned how to make a shape become a form by filling with color and adding contour lines. They also learned how to use highlight and shadow to make their pumpkins appear as 3D forms. They did a great job demonstrating that in their work.

This Week’s Focus: Theme for Jubilee: “Merciful like the Father…” is the ‘motto’ of this Holy Year. This is a shortened version of the version of the verse in Scripture, “Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful” (Luke 6:36). The Pope wrote, “In mercy, we find proof of how God loves us. He gives his entire self, always, freely, asking nothing in return. He comes to our aid whenever we call upon him…He comes to assist us in our weakness. And his help consists in helping us accept his presence and closeness to us. Day after day, touched by his compassion, we also can be compassionate toward others.” You can learn more about the Jubilee year by visiting our website.

Last Saturday, OLG and St. Bernadette parishioners/school families were welcomed into the Walmesley Gym by the wonderful aroma of homemade Italian cuisine and the warm ambience of Tuscany itself for the Annual CYO Italian Dinner. Around 200 family and friends enjoyed an evening full of laughter, music and some were even lucky enough to walk away with some great raffled off items, all while raising funds for CYO Athletics. Many photographs were taken during the evening. Click here for free downloads.
We would first like to thank all of the evening’s attendees for supporting CYO Athletics! Joe and Toni Malaspino – this event could not have been possible without them and their strong and dedicated kitchen crew. We thank them for their long hours over hot stoves and never ending dish lines. Thank you to Cindy Hegland, our photographer for the evening, for catching such candid photos and organizing them for us to view and purchase. We also want to thank our set up/take down crew and our wonderful and fast moving servers and raffle crew: Tina and John Heins (our Procurement Lead), Theresa and Wilton Rivera, Albert and Sherrie Gonzales, Peter Eastey, Shannon Lysen, Catherine Wilson, Jori McChesney, Kathleen Sullivan, CYO Board Members (Todd Carlsen, Theresa Godfrey, Erin Pedras, Mackenzie Sullivan, Daren Monroe, Marc Christianson and Micheal Katz), The Besagno Family (Barbara Joe, John, Jacob, Tessa, Julia and Brandi), Ron Blasser, Al Colgen and Rob Dillion. Thank you also to Sal Pagan for all the extra clean up after our event.

Tom Hutlyer
Kenny and Cathy Volpone
Cindy Hegland
Matt McCarthy

Special Thanks from the CYO Board…
The Italian Dinner was a rousing success! Thanks so much to Michelle Turcinec, Tina Hein, and Joe and Toni Malaspino and all volunteer crews for such a fun and successful night. You put in a ton of work to make it happen and it showed. The tables were full, the raffle tickets sold out, and the dance floor was overflowing. CYO is striving to stay committed to the kids and offer enhancement programs and activities. This cannot be done without the support of all the parents and the parish community. We thank you for coming to the Italian Dinner to enjoy a night of fun and we thank you for your continued and unwavering support. We cannot do it without you!
The CYO website has a new look and lots more information. Read about the CYO By-laws, Mission Statement, and much more. There’s even a section where we’ve posted photos of your kids playing in the various sports they love. Check it out!
