Spanish Program Curriculum Overview

The OLG Spanish curriculum is designed based on TPRS (Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling), a language teaching method that engages students, produces fluency fast that students retain year after year and supported by Rockalingua, an online resource to help children and beginners learn Spanish in a way that students enjoy.

    • Students in all grades will learn through TPRS, as well as presentations where they can interact and practice Spanish pronunciation.
    • Students from third through eight grade can also practice the Spanish lessons by doing Rockalingua worksheets and watching the program’s various videos.

Below is a broad overview of the Spanish program according to each grade:

Kindergarten through Second Grade:

      • Students will learn basic topics such as colors, shapes, numbers, family, laterality and body parts in a fun way with songs, videos and game activities.
      • They will enrich their knowledge in Spanish by learning different vocabulary throughout the school year such as animals, seasons of the year, fruits and vegetables, clothes among other topics.
      • They will also be taught the correct pronunciation in Spanish and learn how to pray in Spanish.

Third through Fifth Grade through Grade:

      • Students will learn in a dynamic and fun way more extensive vocabulary related to the extended family, numbers 1-1000, seasons of the year, months of the year, weather, body parts, Latin America an Spain traditions, among others.
      • They will be introduced to Spanish grammar such as genders, plural and singular forms, definite and indefinite articles, possessive adjectives, among other basic topics.
      • They will also learn the basic sounds of the Spanish language while practicing speaking and listening.

Sixth Grade:

Students will learn the basic sounds of the Spanish language while practicing speaking and listening. This will improve their conversational Spanish skills, which allows students to practice the language in a way that is beneficial in real life situations. Other specific areas of study include recognition, pronunciation and spelling of basic vocabulary and grammar structure of the language. Students will learn:

      • To speak longer sentences. Maybe they don’t always know every word but they can speak around it so that you are understood.
      • To speak natural in straightforward social situation.
      • To answer questions with accuracy.
      • To create dialogs, and to express their opinions in Spanish.
      • To write complete thoughts creatively and clearly.

Seventh & Eighth Grade:

Students will learn the basic sounds of the Spanish language while practicing speaking and listening. This will improve their conversational Spanish skills, which allows students to practice the language in a way that is beneficial in real life situations. Other specific areas of study include recognition, pronunciation and spelling of basic vocabulary and grammar structure of the language as well as learning to use the main Spanish verbs in the present tense. Students will also learn and appreciate the culture and art of Latin America and Spain through the use of a variety of materials and media. Students will learn:

    • The main Spanish verbs in the present tense.
    • Grammar and pronunciation.
    • Learn how to apply the verbs correctly and understand their uses.
    • They will learn in a dynamic and attractive way where the Latin American countries and Spain are located as well as their traditions, food, art and music.
