Our Environment

Feel of the School: OLG is a true Community and a Second Home!
Children spend a large amount of time at school so you want to make sure it’s a place they feel comfortable. Not only is OLG a non-intimidating environment (as some larger schools might feel like for some children), but it is also a warm and cheerful place for our students, full of positivity and where they feel truly welcome (while enjoying an appropriate degree of order of course). In addition, having one class per grade brings up an even stronger sense of community among children. OLG offers an inviting atmosphere where staff are kind and help students treat each other with kindness, too. Come visit us and you will feel the contagious energy, from the moment you walk through the school doors! 🙂

Intergenerational Family Groups
One of the most unique and special aspects of the OLG community are the intergenerational family groups which allows kids of all ages across the school to get to know each other. Intergenerational Family Groups cover a wide range of projects and activities which are undertaken with the aim of bringing generations together, creating a stronger sense of community, allowing the younger children to feel “seen” and valued, as well as developing the natural leadership skills among our older kids who get to learn to become role models and care for their younger peers. All intergenerational family group projects and activities, such as monthly Mass attendance or different service projects, will provide a vehicle for generations to interact and become engaged together while providing learning opportunities.

Relationships with Teachers
Students learn best when they are comfortable with their teachers. They will not learn from someone they feel doesn’t know them or even like them. At OLG, we understand the benefits of having a personal connection with students in the classroom, and teachers are encouraged to build relationships with their students. Our smaller student body and above-average staff to student ratio allows those healthy teacher-student relationships to blossom, as well as quality one-on-one time spent with students. This way, we are more adept at recognizing individual student’s strengths and weaknesses and helping them work on both so the child is successful. In a similar way, these great teacher-student relationships are also expanded into supportive and dynamic relationships between teachers and parents.

An Environment of True Self Expression
Here’s something most people wouldn’t think about when picking a school: are children allowed to do their own work? You might think this is a given considering the emphasis schools put on not cheating, but sometimes it is ironically the school’s system itself that keeps children from doing the work themselves. At OLG, we understand that while children need to learn to follow directions, they should also have a degree of free license to fully express themselves with their assignments, which allows them to experiment. This approach helps them learn to think for themselves and develop self-confidence.

Diverse Community
OLG’s diverse student body is one of the aspects that makes our school so special. In fact, not only our students, but also our faculty and staff come from economically, ethnically and culturally diverse backgrounds, which enables children to question their own assumptions, gain new perspectives, and develop a creative, critical and compassionate understanding of the world around them. Our students learn about different cultures during their education and, as a result, they feel more comfortable and safe with these differences later in life. This allows them to interact in a wider range of social groups and feel more confident in themselves as well as in their interactions with others. Through celebrating the rich diversity of our school and the many cultures represented there, we strive to support families of all backgrounds with the embrace of Christ. We are a school that is proud to be part of a parish community of open arms and loving hearts.

School Safety
School safety is undeniably a hot topic these days, and as a parent, your child’s safety is always one of your top concerns. At OLG, we are committed to our duty to provide reasonable security and disciplinary measures to protect students from dangers outside and inside our campus. Another advantage of having an smaller student body and above-average staff to student ratio is that it becomes natural for everyone to get to know each other on a first name basis and it allows staff to closely monitor children at all times.
