Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish School is a ministry of the Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish, located at the highest point of West Seattle. The Parish was established in 1960 by the Most Reverend Thomas A. Connolly, then Archbishop of Seattle. It was created from a southern portion of Holy Rosary Parish and a northern section of Holy Family Parish. In the beginning, the hospitality of the Sisters at Mount St. Vincent provided a site for the rectory and the parish hall, giving shelter to the priests and a room for meetings and socializing.
Land was first purchased for the construction of the school. As the school was being built, some 200 Guadalupe students were transported to Maryknoll school, now part of Providence Hospital. The school opened in 1962 and that year found a grateful and joyous congregation celebrating Christmas Mass in the new school building. For the next seven years the basement was used for the church and the parish hall. After a tremendous amount of hard work, unending perseverance and a successful all-parish fund drive, the Parish church opened in 1970.
The Sisters of Saint Mary of Oregon founded and served the school until 1974. Since then, the faculty has been staffed by educators who, together, strive to equip our students with the compassion, morality, courage, critical thinking, and academic excellence necessary for responsible stewardship in today’s society.
The school began with single grade level classrooms, kindergarten to eight grade. And after a year of study in 2003, the school launched the preschool and prekindergarten programs. But it wasn’t until the spring of 2012, when the school and parish completed a long-awaited project: a state-of-the-art school gym. Soon after, in 2018, the school transformed our lower floor into the Early Learning Center (ELC), expanding the pre-school and prekindergarten programs to offer convenient full and half day options for parents.
Thus, over the last 60 years, Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic School has been committed to providing quality Catholic education for the surrounding community, working in partnership with each student’s family to create a nurturing environment where children are challenged and supported to grow intellectually and spiritually, in service and in leadership.
Accreditations
Our Lady of Guadalupe School is accredited by the Western Catholic Education Association, approved by the Washington State Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction, and is a member of the National Catholic Education Association.
Curriculum
Our Lady of Guadalupe School is guided by Archdiocesan curriculum guidelines and Washington State Common Core Standards for establishing curriculum goals school-wide. Our core curriculum includes religion, service outreach, math, social studies, science, language arts, music, physical education and art. In addition, we have a full-time counselor on staff.
