OLG Newsletter – Sept 4th

September 4, 2014

Dear OLG Families,

It is great to see you and your children back – in the hallways, parking lot, and classrooms, and at the ice cream social last week! Thank you for your commitment to Catholic education and this wonderful OLG community!  The school has been filled with great energy this week! Fr. Jack talked about each of our students as seeds at Mass on Tuesday, after reading the Parable of the Mustard Seed. Our teachers are already hard at work creating rich soil and watering those seeds. We look forward to seeing how they grow and bloom this year.

We have been working on some changes to our website this summer and are in the process of testing the new site. You’ll be receiving an email shortly, announcing that it is live! In the meantime, we are posting the essentials on the current site, but focusing our energy on getting the new site updated and ready to launch. Thanks for your patience in this brief transition period.

Information about the Shelter Discernment meeting this Saturday at 10:00 am in the School Hall is posted below. I encourage you to come be a part of the conversation – with questions, your own insights, stories, hopes, and any fears or concerns that you are wrestling with. This is an opportunity to explore the issue of homelessness within a faith context and in community, and your input and questions are important in the process. Please check out the information posted on the parish website in advance, if possible.

Already, our Parent Org is gearing up with a variety of fun-raisers andfundraisers. See below for opportunities to get involved. Please remember that background checks and the Safe Environment training must be up-to-date for all volunteers. See the sidebar for the new background check form and a letter explaining the changes. NOTE:  A school or parish office staff member needs to see your original driver’s license and sign off that we have seen it. If you are new to the school or get an email from Sandy Plummer that you are due for an update, please stop by the school office.

I pray for a year of learning, growth and deepening community!

Our Lady of Guadalupe, pray for us!

“The whole purpose of education is to turn mirrors into windows.”  ~Sydney J. Harris

Welcome to the OLG Parent Organization for the 2014/2015 school year! As an OLG parent/guardian, you are a member of the Parent Organization, and we are involved in a lot of fun activities throughout the school year that are both social for families and beneficial to our school. This year, the OLG Parent Org is on track to raise $125,000 for our school, which will help keep the cost of tuition down and provide support for other necessary school expenses.

In the coming weeks, you will learn more about each of our fundraisers and how you can join the fun and volunteer to help. Next Thursday, September 11th, the Parent Org is holding an information and sign-up fair for our fundraising events before the Back-to-School Night for K-5th grade in the School Hall. Our wonderful fundraising hairs will be available to answer questions and find the perfect spot for you to lend your talents. This is a great opportunity to sign up to get involved and provide the help the school needs to turn those mirrors into windows for our children!

Next week, we will have information on our NEW commitment hour tracking system, Volunteer Spot. This year, we promise to eliminate the headaches of tracking your volunteer hours with a user-friendly system that will take all of the guess work out of the entire process. So stay tuned!

I look forward to a fun-filled year and working with all of you to support our school and families!

Orders from the catalog will be delivered to the school before the end of October, with no shipping charges.

After that is complete click on the “SHOP NOW” button that will take you to the   “Choose how you would like to Assign Credit and Shop” section. If you wish to assign credit to your student, enter the six digit student code in to the “Student & School Credit” section. Follow Up Meeting on OLG Hosting a WHEEL Women’s Shelter

On August 3rd, parishioners from OLG met with representatives from WHEEL to learn more about their program and discern hosting a shelter.  We will have a follow-up meeting on Saturday, September 6th at 10:00am in the School Hall.  A list of questions and answers from the previous meeting has been posted to our website, along with information about WHEEL and facts about homelessness in our area.    There are also copies available in our church pamphlet rack.  Some of the answers have been updated since the August 3rd meeting.  Please try to review these before the September meeting.  For more information, contact Jennifer Ibach at 206-935-0358 x.120.

Please pray for Renee Kreilkamp, mother of Kristin Dixon, and for her family. Renee recently died.

Please continue to keep Brianna Nelson, 2014 OLG graduate, and her family, in your prayers. Brianna has been diagnosed with leukemia and is undergoing chemotherapy at Children’s Hospital. We pray for speedy healing for Brianna and strength and comfort for her family at this difficult time.
